5th Separate Anti-aircraft Artillery Battery: report by Edward Dykhdalevich on September 5, 1939

Here, the traffic officer on duty informed me that there is only one free way through the Malkinia train station, allowing passage, but there are 4 vehicles waiting on the other side of the station heading towards Bialystok. So I could only continue on my way after these transports had passed. Since I had no other choice, I had to agree to skip these trains, otherwise I would not have got to the other side. On the instructions of the dispatcher, I ordered my transport to move 200 meters behind the station to clear the road. Soon, the 1st transport pulled into the station. It was a field battery, I don't remember which regiment. It was supposed to be unloaded at Malkin and take up positions at the railway station, because, as they said, the Germans were supposed to arrive at any moment. Therefore, I ordered to be directed towards Warsaw, and there, somewhere along the way, I will arrange the further direction of movement.
When unloading of the field battery began, 5 planes flew in from the east side at an altitude of about 50 m and threw bombs at the station, while one of the bombs hit the first transport wagons and a locomotive. Thus, the Malkinia railway station was permanently blocked. This time, my transport was also hit, because the planes, flying along the train several times, dropped several smaller-caliber bombs on it. However, the bombs exploded at a distance of 20-30 m from the transport, without causing any damage. In addition, 1 rangefinder was damaged, a bullet from a cannon hit a part of the pipe, and several vehicles were damaged by machine-gun and cannon bullets.
The raid carried out by the Germans was noticed only at the last moment, and it was difficult to cope with it. The raid lasted about 2-3 hours with short breaks. Therefore, the wagons had to be turned over so that for each batch of wagons there was at least one cannon with movable sides, so that the wagons could be loaded, which were then rolled along the train to other wagons.
When, after completing the raid, I became convinced that further travel was impossible, and damage repair and track repairs could only be carried out at night, I decided to take the transport to the nearest railway station with a railway ramp or the possibility of installing it in order to discharge the battery and take a circular march to the designated place. I learned from the driver of our transport that the nearest station where the battery can be unloaded is the railway station in Chizhevo, twenty kilometers from Malkinia, so I gave the order to take the railway transport to this station.
